From his formative years to his current international jazz icon status; Cohen’s artistry has transcended borders and captivated audiences worldwide. His virtuosity on the upright bass is unparalleled, marked by a deep, resonant tone and an intuitive sense of rhythm that forms the heartbeat of his music. But Cohen’s talents extend far beyond his instrumental prowess.

Among these are some of the brightest young talents from the new jazz scene, including drummer Roni Kaspi, pianist Guy Moskovich, his working core trio as the centre on many of the titles and joined by saxophonist Yuval Drabkin. Roni Kaspibrings a youthful vigour to the album, infusing the music with a sense of spontaneity and drive. After more than 3 years of touring with Avishai Cohen, she’s even got a dedicated title on this recording (“Roni’s Swing”), written by Cohen as a homage to her dynamic and energetic drumming. Guy Moskovich, a pianist whose harmonic sensibilities and technical prowess have garnered him recognition as a rising star in jazz, provides the perfect complement to Cohen’s bass lines. Yuval Drabkin, on saxophone, adds another layer of richness to the extensive ensemble. His emotive playing and nuanced interpretations bring a compelling voice to the project, enhancing the album’s overall depth and complexity.

Quotes

  • Everything is held together by a subtle bass swing. Unsurprisingly, there is a starring role on ‘Drabkin’ for saxophonist Yuval Drabkin, who plays beautifully calm, expansive notes. He provides the most notable guest contributions with velvety, emotive playing.

  • Roni’s Swing grabbed One Jazz’s ears for its sparkling and yes, bright, forward motion sound driven by drummer Roni Kaspi. Brightlight is a testament to Cohen’s eclecticism as an artist, featuring a diverse array of original compositions, jazz standards and one vocal track, the classic ‘Summertime’.The overall effect is one of catchy tunes played with a sense of hopeful enthusiasm with Guy Moskovich’s glistening piano and plenty of well-pitched sumptuous bass solos from the Avishai himself.

  • Great is the glowing interplay between Drabkin and Cohen on Jimmy van Heusen's jazz standard ‘Polka Dots and Moonbeams’ with which this versatile and highly entertaining album ends.

  • The beating heart of ‘Brightlight’ is Cohen's extraordinary trio, consisting of the brilliant pianist Guy Moskovich and the dynamic Roni Kaspi on drums. This ensemble demonstrates impressive versatility, moving from subtle interpretations of classical works to compelling compositions of their own.

    Maxazine (NL)
  • The grooves, his trademark, continue to prevail, alternately as an underpinning for an overlying melody line or just on their own as the basic structure for a funky or swinging passage.
