It’s New Music Friday! Avishai is excited to release his 20th studio album Iroko with his friend and musical partner master congero and vocalist Abraham Rodriguez Jr. Within the past few weeks, singles “The Healer,” “Fahina” and “Fly Me To The Moon” have all been released. New single “Abie’s Thing” is out tomorrow!

Avishai and his new Banda ‘Iroko’ just completed an amazing week-long residency at the legendary Blue Note club in New York, a week full of rousing sets and old friends. The New York Sun raves, “Everyone in the room was immediately shaking, moving, and ‘chair dancing’ as best we could to that irresistible clave beat.” The Sun goes on to add, “the entire enterprise is driven by Mr. Cohen, whose powerful bassistry introduces and lays down the groove, then energetically propels the works forward.”

Thursday’s headliner was bassist Avishai Cohen’s brilliant trio, featuring Roni Kaspi on drums – a 22 year old with lightning hands and a feather touch – and another young player of rare ability, pianist Guy Moskovich, himself just 26. The intense, emotionally riveting set explored tunes from the Shifting Sands recording such as ‘Intertwined’ and older material such as the poignant ‘Remembering’ – each track full of extraordinary rhythmic interplay between the players, crystal clear piano solo development and Cohen’s own committed muscular approach on double bass.
